Prosecco is a sparkling wine produced in the northeastern Italian region of Prosecco. Prosecco wine is titled after the Italian town of Prosecco, which is a suburb of Trieste, in the exact manner as Champagne wines are titled after their ancestral lands. While Prosecco is widely recognized as Italian wine, the grapes used to make it were actually imported to Italy from Slovenia. Prosecco grapes were originally recognized as glera grapes until 2009 after Italian winemakers chose to free the fruit of its Slovenian heritage and rebrand it as Prosecco.
